Xfinity Modem & Gateway Lights Explained
What every Xfinity gateway light means — XB7, XB8, XFi gateway white, red, orange, blue, and green LED patterns and how to fix them.

Quick info
Visual description
Modern Xfinity gateways (XB7, XB8, XFi) use a single LED on the front that changes color to communicate device state. There are no separate WAN/LAN/Wi-Fi LEDs — everything is communicated through this one LED's color and pattern.
What it means
Xfinity XFi Gateway LED quick reference:
Solid white: Fully operational. Internet connected, Wi-Fi broadcasting normally.
Blinking white: Starting up or applying a software update. Normal for 3–5 minutes.
Solid red: No internet. Downstream signal issue — check coax cable and call Xfinity if persistent.
Blinking red: Critical error. Usually a provisioning failure after a hardware change.
Solid orange / amber: Downstream lock achieved but no internet — ISP provisioning not complete.
Blinking orange: The gateway is searching for an upstream channel (standard modem startup phase). Normal for 3 minutes.
Blinking green: The gateway is connected to the internet. This is actually 'working' — Xfinity modems use green for successful connection.
Blinking blue: WPS pairing mode is active.
Solid blue: Bluetooth pairing active (for Xfinity remote or Xfinity app).
No light: Gateway in sleep/LED night mode, or no power.
Brand & model variations
The same light pattern can mean different things across manufacturers.
| Brand / Model | What white solid means | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
Xfinity XB7 gateway (most common since 2021) | Single front LED. White = working. Orange = no internet. Red = critical. Green blinking = connected (this is healthy). Blue = WPS/Bluetooth active. | If orange: unplug coax cable for 30 seconds, reconnect firmly. Wait 3 minutes for re-provisioning. |
Xfinity XB8 gateway (2022+, 10Gbps capable) | Same LED behavior as XB7 but with updated firmware. XB8 shows a distinct 'purple' blink during docsis 3.1 channel bonding at startup — this is normal. | Purple startup blink is unique to XB8 and is normal. Give it 3 minutes to complete bonding. |
Xfinity Older X1 gateways (TC8717, TG1682) | Older gateways have multiple separate LEDs: DS, US, Online, 2.4G, 5G. DS/US blinking = bonding channels (startup). Online solid green = working. Online off or red = problem. | On older models: Online LED is the key indicator. Green = working. Off/red = ISP signal issue. |
Diagnose your issue
Answer a few questions to narrow down the cause.
What does the Xfinity gateway LED show?
Safe next steps
Ordered from least to most involved. Check each step as you go.
Open the Xfinity app — it provides real-time gateway status, restart controls, and signal level reporting.
For orange or red: check the coax cable connection at both the gateway and the wall coax jack.
Restart via Xfinity app (preferred) for a clean restart rather than unplugging.
If you must power cycle: unplug 60 seconds and allow 3–5 minutes for full re-provisioning.
Check xfinity.com/outages for area outages before calling.
When to escalate
Stop troubleshooting and contact your ISP or manufacturer if:
- Persistent red after confirmed good coax connection and restart — ISP must check signal levels from outside.
- Gateway is stuck in any blinking state for more than 15 minutes — ISP provisioning failure.
