Quick info
Visual description
Asus routers typically use blue LEDs on older models and white on newer AX-series hardware. Gaming routers (GT series) sometimes use red accents. The main power/status LED changes color to indicate system state. WAN, WLAN 2.4G, WLAN 5G, and LAN LEDs are typically arranged vertically on the front.
What it means
Asus LED quick reference:
Solid white (or solid blue on older models): Normal operation — internet connected, all systems go.
Blinking white/blue: Router is booting or processing. Wait 90 seconds.
Blinking white rapidly: Firmware update in progress. Do not unplug — can brick the device.
Solid orange/amber on WAN LED: WAN port connected but no internet traffic — DHCP or authentication issue.
Solid red on power LED: Hardware fault or firmware recovery mode.
All LEDs off: Night Mode active (check ASUS app) or no power.
WAN LED off: Nothing plugged into WAN port or modem is off.
Brand & model variations
The same light pattern can mean different things across manufacturers.
| Brand / Model | What white solid means | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
Asus RT-AX55, RT-AX58U, RT-AX88U | Vertical LED row. Power (white/blue), WAN (white/orange), WLAN 2.4G, WLAN 5G, and 4x LAN. Power solid = good. WAN orange = internet issue. All white = everything working. | WAN orange: check 192.168.1.1 → Network Map → Internet for error code. |
Asus ZenWiFi (XT8, ZD6, ET8) | ZenWiFi uses a single multi-color LED on each node. White = normal. Blue pulsing = setup. Orange pulsing = no internet. Red = error. ZenWiFi app provides node-specific status. | ZenWiFi app → Network tab shows each node's health and error type. |
Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX (gaming series) | Gaming models have RGB-capable LEDs that can be customized. Default: red = gaming priority mode active. White = normal internet. Pulsing white = booting. Pulsing red = no internet. | Asus Router app → Dashboard. Gaming mode default LEDs: red is intentional, not an error. |
Diagnose your issue
Answer a few questions to narrow down the cause.
What is the main Asus status LED showing?
Safe next steps
Ordered from least to most involved. Check each step as you go.
Open 192.168.1.1 to access the Asus admin dashboard — the Network Map shows the internet connection status in plain language.
WAN LED orange: power cycle modem 60s, then router. Check ISP outages.
Blinking LED during normal operation: if less than 5 minutes, it's likely booting. If more: firmware update in progress.
Power LED red: attempt factory reset. If fail, use ASUS Firmware Restoration Tool.
When to escalate
Stop troubleshooting and contact your ISP or manufacturer if:
- Firmware Restoration fails — router hardware fault, needs replacement.
- WAN LED intermittently orange during the day despite working internet — WAN port connection is loose.
