Quick info
Visual description
Sony earbuds (WF series) have a small LED indicator on the outside of each earbud. Sony over-ear headphones (WH series) place the indicator LED on the side of the headband near the Power button. The LED communicates power state, battery level, Bluetooth pairing mode, and errors through color and blink patterns.
What it means
Sony headphone LED quick reference:
Red, then off (at power-on): Normal startup — Sony flashes red once when turning on, then goes off during normal use.
Blue rapid blink: Pairing mode — the headphone is discoverable and waiting for a Bluetooth connection.
Alternating red/blue blink: Also pairing mode on some Sony models. Place in pairing mode manually by holding the Power button 7 seconds.
Solid red (continuous): Charging in progress when in the case or on a USB cable.
Red blink during use: Low battery warning — approximately 10–15 minutes remaining. Charge soon.
Red fast blink (8 times): Over-temperature protection triggered. Remove from charging and let cool.
White blink: Powering on (WH series).
No light during use: Normal — Sony conserves battery by turning the LED off during regular playback.
Brand & model variations
The same light pattern can mean different things across manufacturers.
| Brand / Model | What white solid means | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
Sony WF-1000XM5 (flagship earbuds) | LED is very dim during normal use by design (battery saving). Pairing: blue rapid blink. Charging in case: case LED shows battery fill. Low battery: brief red flash. The earbuds themselves rarely light up during normal use. | Use Sony Headphones Connect app to check battery level — more accurate than LED observation. |
Sony WH-1000XM5 (flagship over-ear) | LED on headband: solid red = charging. LED off = not charging and battery OK. Pairing mode: alternating red/blue rapid blink. Power on: white blink, then off. | Charging: red = in progress. No light during use = normal (battery above ~10%). |
Sony WF-C700N, WF-C500 (mid-range earbuds) | More active LED than flagship models. Green flash = good battery on power-on. Red flash = low battery on power-on. Pairing: blue rapid blink. Case LED shows remaining charge dots. | Interpret the startup flash color to quickly check battery status. |
Sony LinkBuds S, LinkBuds Open | Minimal LED feedback by design. Pairing mode = blue rapid blink triggered by holding touchpad. Factory reset = hold both touchpads for 10 seconds until the LED flashes 5 times then goes out. | LinkBuds reset: 10-second hold of both touchpads. 5 flashes = reset confirmed. |
Diagnose your issue
Answer a few questions to narrow down the cause.

Safe next steps
Ordered from least to most involved. Check each step as you go.
Install the Sony Headphones Connect app (iOS/Android) for detailed battery and connection status.
Sony LEDs are often off during normal use — this is expected behavior and not a fault.
Rapid blue blink = pairing mode. Open Bluetooth on your phone to connect.
Solid red = charging. Natural indicator — red goes off or changes color when full.
Red blink during playback = charge now (10–15 min battery remaining).
For connectivity issues unrelated to LED: forget the device in Bluetooth settings, power cycle earbuds, and re-pair.
When to escalate
Stop troubleshooting and contact your ISP or manufacturer if:
- Red 8-flash thermal warning happens repeatedly — charging contacts need cleaning or replacement.
- Earbuds won't enter pairing mode despite 7-second hold — needs factory reset (hold both earbud touchpads 10 seconds each).
